When we got home we made a picnic, sorted the kids bikes out and spent approx 3 hours at the park, kids playing and cycling, me reading, Mark snoozing. Was lovely, much cooler than the last couple of weeks. We forgot the duck bread though :-(
Anais said do another battenburg so when I went shopping yesterday I brought marzipan and some "red food colouring" from Sainsbury's. They had two to choose from - plain red and cochineal red, I went with plain red. Only it didn't turn the cake red/pink at all but turned it brown :-( Very disappointing. Now wondering if I should have brought the cochineal red colour instead. Secondly, I usually wrap the cake up in cling film and put a book on top overnight to make sure its level so can decorate it in the morning but I know tomorrow morning I won't have time to decorate it so thought I'd do it all in one go tonight - there is now a huge lumpy circle sticking out from under the centre of the marzipan. Just goes to show is much better if take time and unfortunately this was rushed as no time tomorrow.
Mark picked up these leaf cutters for me in the week so the cake is covered in marzipan with leaf and flower decorations. The icing was from the Dr Oetker box I brought last week, think its approx £1.80 for five colours. We used the yellow and a small amount of blue and black to make the Minions for Anais birthday cake last week. I used the red and green to make the flowers for this cake. There is still a huge amount of black, blue, red and green left.
