Mark had been talking for a few months/going back years about "getting fit" and wanting to try the Couch to 5K. It was one of those things that we said "next week" which turned into next week and the month after and the year after.................
Last summer we were at home and he suggested it again, so we both said we would go for it! I borrowed a pair of Anais' leggings and her old PE trainers (which were too big for me) and we set off to the park with Jo Whiley in our ears to talk us through week one, run one of Couch to 5K.
We went running every other day and managed to up the time we could run at each time until we hit the running for 5K non stop target on 7th September 2019 - it took us 39 minutes to run 5K.
Since then we have ran through autumn (my favourite - seeing the leaves change colour on the trees), through winter (not my favourite - cold and wet), through spring (lovely seeing all the bulbs and flowers come out) and summer (also my favourite - can go out in just a vest).
We have ran before breakfast, lunch and tea. My favourite is before breakfast though this is not possible in winter as it is too dark early in the morning.
We have been chased/followed by a cow in a residential area, told off by a cyclist for running in a cycle lane, got caught out by rain showers, had a key fall out of a hole in a pocket and had to go and find it, Marks been so cold he went running in pyjama bottoms (spoiler alert - he still hasn't bought himself mens running leggings). We've lost each other on certain routes when one person is faster than other, we've been bibbed at by cars, slipped over on frost. We've got up early on several holidays to go for runs. Been out on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day. We've run three half marathons.
Since we started running last year we have covered 1469KM (912 miles) and been out for 249 runs.
Not only has it made us feel fitter but its really good mentally too as it really clears your mind and destresses you. It sets you up for the day. makes you feel like you have recharged yourself.
Happy one year runaversary to us!
